Godzilla 2012 In The News 04/15/10 - The Angry Edition!

Written By: Ken Hulsey

I just wanted to take a couple of minutes this morning to post two items that I think all of you will get a kick out of. One is an actual "Godzilla 2012" related article that was originally linked by Mark Torchia over on the Facebook group. The other is a crazy rant that was posted in response to my "King Kong vs Godzilla" article.

Check these out:

The Time Is Right For A New GODZILLA! Obsessed With Film

UPDATE: Godzilla producer Roy Lee (who also produced the excellent Quarantine and the upsetting The Strangers) contacted me and assured me that most of the items on my wish list are part of the current plan. Understandably, he didn’t want to go into details at this stage, but it sounds like they have a good grasp of this property. Thanks, Roy! It’s nice to know there are still cool people in Hollywood!

News today that Legendary Pictures and Warner Brothers struck a deal with Toho to produce a new Godzilla feature film sent waves of differing emotions through movie lovers everywhere. Some, like Nikki Finke at Deadline, expressed disdain, while other famous movie snobs like Jeffrey Wells over at Hollywood Elsewhere gave the idea a careful but enthusiastic endorsement.
For me, this is a movie that needs to be made.

I spent my boyhood staying up until three in the morning to catch a Godzilla flick on the late late late show. Unlike much of American/British science fiction and fantasy, those old Japanese Godzilla films captured an innocence and sense of abandon and play that appealed directly to my own imagination. Sure, the effects were sometimes laughable, and the plots nearly incomprehensible but it ultimately never mattered. The films had heart, wanton destruction, and a charismatic monster at the center of the melee. What boy didn’t imagine seeing Godzilla stomp all over their hometown? Or, in my case, imagine that they were actually Godzilla himself … which is even better. King Kong broke hearts, while Godzilla elevated them.

Okay, here comes the angry tirade!

I was surprised to find a very nasty response to my "King Kong vs Godzilla" article in my inbox this morning.

In the ten years that I have been creating websites and writing blogs, I have gotten a handful of these, mostly from people who apologised later.

You see, the Internet is a wonderful thing, it gives people a chance to vent their anger and make fun of people, anonymously, without any repercussions to themselves personally.

As many of you know, I got a real doozy of a racist e-mail from a fan at Monster Island News, claiming that Bigfoot was the product of escaped slaves mating with gorillas. This time around the hatred isn't pointed at any race or religious group, just at me personally.

Check out this diatribe:

Stop spelling "suit" as "suite", you f**king moron. Christ, how can you write up a blog if you don't even have a basic grasp on correct spelling and grammar?

Also, how 'bout some real updates? I mean, Godzilla porn?! Give me a f**king break. Oh yes, just because you're a male means you must succumb to the stereotype of enjoying pornography (and because it's related to Godzilla, it must be reported on a f**king blog for the future LP production *rolls eyes*). Get a f**king life. How 'bout not putting up tons of irrelevant bulls**t just because you're bored s**tless between actual "Godzilla 2012" news? Sure, posting prior movie synopses is fine and dandy, but have the common courtesy to spell correctly while doing so and stop the rampant rumor updates and pointless "fan"-based speculation no one gives a s**t about!

Sorry, but no one f**king cares what you would like to see in the production. All your extremely high expectations are not going to be met. Sure, speculation can be fun but it's best to keep it to yourself to save the embarrassment of showing how naive and completely clueless you really are. At the very least of what little information we have, Godzilla will most likely resemble Godzilla in some form. THAT'S ALL. We know nothing else officially. Just use some goddamn sense, Jesus f**king Christ.

Gee.....um....have anger issues?

I just hope that whoever wrote this didn't kick their cat or go on a shooting spree at a college afterward.

I would take the time to dissect this rant and respond to everything in it, but the beautiful thing is, I don't have to. My body of work over the past decade speaks for itself. I have created several successful websites, fansites and blogs that have many loyal fans.

I do want to point out the fact that whoever wrote this, and apparently hates the site, took the time to read through the entire thing. In fact, I'm willing to wager my little finger that they read it every single day from now on.

Granted, this site may not be for everyone, and that's fine by me. If you don't like it, you don't have to read it, and you certainly don't have to send me 'f-bomb' laden tirades about it.

The only reason that I opted to post this, is because I got a very good laugh out of it, and I hope the rest of you did to.

I also believe and being fair, and if someone has a beef with my writing, then they should be able to voice it.

"LEGENDARY PICTURES TO DEVELOP AND PRODUCE MAJOR MOTION PICTURE BASED ON TOHO COMPANY’S ICONIC MONSTER, GODZILLA

Burbank, CA – March 29, 2010 – Legendary Pictures announced today that they will develop and produce a new film based on Toho Company’s famed GODZILLA character. Through the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the rights to produce a movie inspired by Toho’s Godzilla, a franchise the Japanese company created and has nurtured for over fifty years.

Toho’s GODZILLA franchise boasts one of the most widely recognized film creatures worldwide, resulting in a series of books, television programs, video games and more than 25 films worldwide. Legendary intends to approach the film and its characters in the most authentic manner possible. The company will, in the near future, announce a filmmaker to helm the film for an intended 2012 release. The film will fall under the company’s co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Toho will distribute the film in Japan."

"Godzilla" is coming back -- this time, with Legendary Pictures taking the lead, co-producing and co-financing with Warner Bros. for release in 2012.

Legendary announced Monday it had obtained rights to the iconic monster character from Japan's Toho Co., which has overseen more than 25 "Godzilla" films. Toho will release the pic in Japan.

Legendary said it's planning to announce a director shortly.

In addition to Legendary, producers on the new film will be Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Brian Rogers. Yoshimitsu Banno, Kenji Okuhira and Doug Davison will exec produce.

"Godzilla is one of the world's most powerful pop culture icons, and we at Legendary are thrilled to be able to create a modern epic based on this long-loved Toho franchise," said Thomas Tull, Chairman and CEO of Legendary. "Our plans are to produce the Godzilla that we, as fans, would want to see. We intend to do justice to those essential elements that have allowed this character to remain as pop-culturally relevant for as long as it has."

Legendary noted the film will fall under its co-production and co-financing deal with Warner Bros. Legendary's productions with Warners have included "The Dark Knight," "300" and "The Hangover."

Speculation about a new "Godzilla" has been active since last summer. The Bloody Disgusting web site reported in August that the project was in development.
